A well-known and widely popular perennial in the aroid family, originally native to South Africa, with broad, fleshy, bright green leaves and white, funnel-shaped inflorescences. It is widely cultivated in warm temperate climates as an ornamental and for cut flowers.

A rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant, evergreen where rainfall and temperatures are adequate, deciduous where there is a dry season. Its preferred habitat is in streams and ponds or on the banks. It grows to 0.6–1 m (2.0–3.3 ft) tall, with large clumps of broad, arrow shaped dark green leaves up to 45 cm (18 in) long. The inflorescences are large and are produced in spring, summer and autumn, with a pure white spathe up to 25 cm (9.8 in) and a yellow spadix up to 90 mm (3 1⁄2 in) long. The spadix produces a faint, sweet fragrance.

Aethiopica contains calcium oxalate, and ingestion of the raw plant may cause a severe burning sensation and swelling of lips, tongue, and throat; stomach pain and diarrhea may occur.

Germination; Sow indoors at any time. Prior to sowing soak seed overnight. Surface sow x 1 seed per 8cm pot of moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 24-27°C. Germination takes 30-90 days. Even under ideal conditions germination can be erratic and take much longer. Allow seedlings to grow on in the pot while the rhizome forms. Pot on as required or acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

When you see some tiny plants starting to sprout, open the top of the pot, a little each day, so that the new seedlings don't go into shock from the humidity being lowered too quickly. Prick out each seedling as it becomes large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Pot on as required. These plants have very fragile white roots and should be handled with care when potting up.
