A common site in the Yosemite valley, this easy-to-grow California native is somewhat smaller in stature, more uniform in colour, and generally more charming than its more frequently grown cousin, Eschscholzia californica. Best broadcast in early spring in not-too-fertile garden soils, Eschscholzia caespitosa mingles beautifully with Nemophila menziesii. Tufted California Poppy is lightly and pleasantly scented hardy annual to some noses. It will bloom in spring through early summer in most locations, and will self-sow wherever it is happy. It appreciates full sun, cool weather, and requires no fertilization and very little water.
Wildflowers are extremely variable in color, and it is especially so with California poppies, but this seed will most probably produce blooms in a pretty pale orange.

Sow outdoors, March-May, where they are to flower, 0.5cm (¼") deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Thin seedlings to 15cm (6") apart. Water well until plants are established. For a continuous display, make sowings at two to three-week intervals. Sowings made in curves, rather than straight lines, often create a more pleasing effect. Flowers: June-October.
