Shepherd’s Purse scientifically known as Capsella bursa-pastoris is an annual herb. This common plant has been used as a food over the centuries and gets its name from the seed pods or ‘purses’ that contain the seeds or ‘coins’. These seeds though tiny have been used as an ingredient for breads or dampers by being roasted and ground into a flour.

They need a period of chilling to break it's dormancy.
Prepare the soil by breaking up the clods on the top of the soil, and push the coarser elements over to the edges with a rake. The smaller the seeds, the more you need to get a finer result. Sow seeds of less than 2mm in line or on the fly. For seeds between 2 and 4 mm, sow them in line with a few centimetres space in between. Finally, sow the large seeds in a heap: dig a little hole and put 2 to 5 seeds in it. Cover the seeds 2-3 times their height, add some sand if your soil is very heavy.
Water regularly in the first weeks. Try to avoid watering on sunny afternoons to minimize the amount of moisture lost to evaporation. If your plant is in a pot, check the top soil in the pot either by looking at it or touching it with your finger. In any case, if it hasn’t rained in a month, water!
