Sainfoin is easily identified as it is our only member of the pea family with a stalked spike of bright pink flowers. Flowering occurs from June to August and pollination is mainly by bumble bees, perfect for growing for your pets, fast growing Sainfoin is a silage or hay crop that can also be grazed. It is drought-resistant, needs no nitrogen fertiliser, does not cause bloat and is a natural anthelmintic. In these times of rising fertiliser, feed and veterinary drug prices, it is a crop that can be of huge benefit to farmers, and the environment.

Sainfoin thrives on free draining, alkaline and calcareous soils (pH6.2 or above).  It is not suitable for moisture-retentive or acidic ground.

Probably best sown in the autumn, in common with many members of the pea family, sainfoin seed exhibits hard-coat dormancy. If it is important to have the maximum germination rate in the shortest period of time you could try a light scarification.
