This lovely little plant is a real must for your garden providing as it does a colourful display when very little else is in flower. For most of the first year from seed all you get is a small, green cushion of foliage; come autumn, however, it realises that things need to be done and suddenly this cushion starts growing bigger and bigger. Then in late winter it starts producing countless buds that open into quite delightful, half-inch, primrose-yellow, vaguely Primrose-like flowers with a deeper yellow throat to give a long-lasting, early spring show of loveliness.

A hardy biennial which can grow up to 45cm, this belongs in family Boraginaceae which is part of the lutea species of the Nonea genus.

Germination; For best results sow directly in spring. Indoors, surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Press seeds lightly into the soil cover with 5mm soil as darkness is needed for germination. Ideal temp. 15-20°C. Germination takes 4-30 days. Germination can be erratic. Once seedlings are large enough to handle prick out to 25cm spacing. Directly, sow where they are to flower after danger of frost has passed. Under glass, sow in Sep. for overwintering and germination the following spring as the weather warms.

Growing; Will grow in any soil in full or partial sun. Water a little until established. Requires little attention. If left alone will create a blanket of flowers.

Cultivation; A biennial plant which self-seeds freely so appears as a perennial. Pull up plants once flowering has finished to restrict spread.
