Papaver Somniferum ‘Danish Dwarf’ is a stunning variety from the Papaver Somniferum family, Danish Flag Dwarf is a fantastic little poppy showcasing the beautiful colours of Denmark’s national flag. A beautiful red flower offers single, feather edged petals with a bright white cross in its distinctive centre, and it is a fantastic and high impact plant for any garden. A gem of a poppy variety, Danish Flag Dwarf is smaller than the traditional Danish Flag variety and grows to between 18 and 24 inches tall.
Ideal for the front of a border or for planting in a container, this beautiful specimen of Papaver Somniferum will freely flower throughout the season and will provide some wonderful poppy blooms at a lower height than many others. And with its five inch blooms it more than makes up for its small size.
Like all Papaver Somniferum’s, Danish Flag Dwarf is an annual variety that will flower throughout a season before producing a large number of seeds. With stunning seed pods, plants can be left to self-seed, allowing seedlings to appear around the garden. Alternatively seeds can be collected and sown in the fall or early spring to ensure on-going colour throughout the year.

Seeds can be sown from late summer to late April, preferring recently disturbed soil with good drainage. The species does not transplant well so scatter the seeds sparingly and cover with a very fine layer of earth (rake in).
Water well until germination, keeping the earth moist, the young seedlings grow fast and look like baby lettuce to start with. This variety does need space to grow, ideally about 30cm apart, but they will thrive on less if well watered, so thin well to at least 15cm between each plant.
Dead head to encourage further flowering, Cut the heads once mature and hang to dry or leave to re-seed.
