An interesting plant for backgrounds, cottage gardens and group plantings, once a very common garden plant, it is not seen much anymore, probably because it is slow to establish, but once established, it is a very long lived plant. In hot weather, old flowers or seed pods emit a flammable oil which, on a windless summer evening, can be ignited with a match resulting in a brief vapour burn which is harmless to the plant, hence the common name.

A widespread clump forming perennial, Dictamnus Albus has feathery lemon scented leaves to around 35 cm in length, with white flowers, which appear on spikes up to 90 cm tall in the summer, each to around 2 to 3 cm across. Likes full sun or partial shade, and a moderately fertile well drained soil. Fully hardy to -15°C. Grows to a height of around 90 cm and spread of around 60 cm.

Germination; Sow indoors at any time. Sow in a cold frame in autumn. Sow into moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 23°C for 6-8 weeks then cold stratify. Move to 4°C for 6-8 weeks. Remove to warmth for germination, slowly raising the temp. to 10°C. Seedlings should emerge with 2 months, if not repeat warm/cold cycle. In a cold frame natural autumn warmth, followed by winter cold should offer ideal conditions for germination to occur in spring as the weather warms. This seed often needs several rounds of cold treatment and may not germinate until the second year. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

Growing; Prefers any well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full or partial sun.

Cultivation; Cut back to the base of the plant in autumn. Propagate by fresh seed, place in a cold frame in autumn.
