Prunus campanulata is a species of cherry native to Japan, Taiwan, southern and eastern China (Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Hunan, Fujian, and Zhejiang), and Vietnam. It is a large shrub or small tree, growing 3–8 m (10–26 ft) tall. It is widely grown as an ornamental tree, and a symbol of Nago in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It is variously known in English as the Taiwan cherry, Formosan cherry, or bellflower cherry. It was described in 1883 by Carl Johann Maximowicz.

Prunus campanulata is one of the many cherry blossom trees that blooms early. Their seeds portray a physiological and morphological dormancy that is broken when exposed to cold and warm temperatures before germination. The flower is fertilized by pollinating insects and can begin to flower in 1 to 2 years.

Sowing the seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year, begin by placing the seeds in a fridge for 5 to 8 days, leave them to soak in water at room temperature for 12 to 20 hours afterwards and plant them 1cm deep into moist cultivation soil. Germination starts after 4 to 10 weeks.

Remember that ornamental cherries love bright to places.

As they grow, regular garden soil will suffice even for young plants. As long as the cherry is raised in a pot, it should be watered a lot. Planted outside, however, they will also need plenty of rain. Provide the ornamental cherry with organic nutrients once a month form March until September.

By autumn (before leaf shed), the leaves take on a spectacular colouring. The flowering and ornamental cherry is winter-hardy and frost-resistant, respectively, already after its first year of growth. The root ball needs to be protected from frost only when the plant is raised in a pot.
