Calluna Vulgaris is a low-growing, evergreen ground cover plant. It is important not to cover Scottish Heather seeds, but just press them slightly into the soil. Calluna Vulgaris has shrub-like appearance and a very attractive ever-changing foliage that develops a bronze to purple cast in fall and winter. The foliage is extremely showy all season long, and in addition, Calluna Vulgaris blooms for several months. The Scottish Heather's purple to pink flowers are rich in nectar and they attract bees, butterflies and moths.

Calluna Scotch Heather is an outstanding ground cover and rock garden plant. This low to the ground, compact evergreen perennial shrub is also often planted as a low border plant. Calluna Vulgaris seeds have to be kept moist until germination, and Scotch Heather grows best in moist, acidic, sandy or gravelly, very well-drained soil appreciating full sun and tolerating partial shade. Overall, this plant prefers a moist environment and cool climate, and Scotch Heather be used as dry or cut flower for floral arrangements.

And as used by the Williams Brothers of Alloa, in their Fraoch Heather Ale, you can also use it to create a light amber ale… but you’ll have to find the ancient Gaelic recipe to do it.
